When we place our loved ones in a nursing home, assisted living facility, or residential care facility, we do so with the expectation that they will be cared for, kept safe, and treated with the utmost respect. But unfortunately this is not always what transpires. Sadly, elder abuse – especially in a care facility setting – is not uncommon.
According to a 2008 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 out of every 10 elders reported emotional, physical, or sexual abuse or neglect over the past year. Though under-reported, abuse and fraud costs pertaining to elder Americans are estimated to range from $2.9 billion - $36.5 billion. |
Elders are most susceptible to abuse, with those who experience such conduct at a 300 percent higher risk of death. Social isolation and mental impairment are two very strong factors in considering vulnerability to abuse. Individuals with dementia, Alzheimer's, or disabilities are most at risk.
With elder residents left embarrassed or in fear of retaliation, these incidents are rarely reported. Family members, who would otherwise take action, often remain unaware that the abuse is even occurring. There are many types of abuse including neglect and physical assault. It is very important to know the signs of elder/nursing home abuse. |
